Portland, United States – Sept 29, 2026 – The NW Portland practice, founded in 2011, brings two care philosophies together under one roof so patients can move between them without starting over.
Synergy Women’s Health, a gynecology and women’s health practice that has served women in the Portland area since 2011, is drawing attention to a care model that’s less common than it should be: conventional OB/GYN care and functional medicine working side by side, with the same team, coordinated around the patient rather than the appointment slot.
Care That Starts Where It Should Every patient at Synergy starts with a thorough clinical evaluation, including a detailed medical history, physical exam, and appropriate lab work. That’s the foundation, and it’s intentional. Serum testing covers a lot of ground, and the goal is always to use insurance as fully as possible before moving to specialized or out-of-pocket options.
For many women, conventional gynecologic care addresses everything they need. But for patients whose symptoms persist, don’t fit neatly into a diagnosis, or keep cycling back despite standard treatment, the practice offers a functional medicine track led by Dr. Michelle Sang, MD, FAARM, FACOG. That track takes a closer look at how the body’s systems interact, considers contributing factors that a standard workup may not surface, and builds a treatment plan that can include nutrition, lifestyle, targeted supplementation, and medication when appropriate. Specialized testing, such as advanced hormone panels or stool analysis, is available when the clinical picture calls for it. It’s not a routine starting point.
The functional medicine program operates on a membership model with a fee structure patients select based on their situation. All office visits, regardless of the reason for the visit, are billed to insurance. That structure is designed to keep insurance working for the patient while the membership supports the extended time and coordination that this level of care requires.
The Team Dr. Sang holds a BA from Harvard University and her MD from Oregon Health and Science University. She’s board-certified in OB/GYN and in Anti-Aging Medicine, with additional formal training in functional and integrative medicine. She leads the functional medicine program and supervises the integration of functional approaches across the broader team.
The practice is co-led by Dr. Karen Ogryzlo, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN and co-owner of Synergy, who directs conventional gynecologic care. Sangita Ghimire, WHNP, brings over seven years of experience in women’s health and primary gynecologic care and is fluent in English, Nepali, and Hindi.Joy Rothschild, WHNP rounds out the team with 15 years of women’s health practice under her belt.
The nurse practitioners manage a wide range of preventive and gynecologic concerns. When a patient’s care points toward a functional or integrative evaluation, they refer directly to Dr. Sang or incorporate functional medicine guidance under her supervision. The two approaches inform each other rather than operating in separate tracks.
What This Looks Like for Patients Consider a woman who’s been managing persistent fatigue, irregular cycles, and mood changes that haven’t resolved with standard approaches. Her care at Synergy might begin with Dr. Ogryzlo or one of the nurse practitioners for a full gynecologic workup. If standard results don’t explain the full picture, or if she wants to explore contributing factors more deeply, she’s referred to Dr. Sang for a functional medicine consultation. From there, her plan is built around her specific history, her priorities, and what the data actually shows. No two plans look the same, because no two patients are the same.
Functional medicine isn’t the right layer for every patient, and Synergy doesn’t position it that way. It takes time, honest conversation, and a patient who wants to engage as an active participant. For patients who are ready for that, it changes what care can do.
Access and Location Synergy Women’s Health is located in the Lovejoy Medical Building, Suite 300, in NW Portland.
