First corporate foundation in MISUMI Group’s history opens co-investment to global supplier network
OAKLAND, Calif. and TOKYO, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — MISUMI Americas today announced the launch of the MISUMI Imprint Foundation, a new philanthropic institution advancing engineering education, applied design and robotics programs, and industry–academia partnerships across the United States. The Foundation launched with a $2 million seed investment and is the first corporate giving organization in MISUMI Group’s 63-year history.
The Foundation will make grants in three areas:
- Scholarships & Access: Need-based support for first-generation and underrepresented students in engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain, at vocational, trade, and university programs alike.
- Future Builders Programs: Equipment grants for manufacturing labs, engineering team sponsorships, maker spaces, and student hackathons.
- Industry–Academia Partnerships: Curricula built around real manufacturing problems, internship and apprenticeship pathways, and mentorship and career support.
The Foundation addresses a workforce challenge MISUMI sees across its customer base, its manufacturing partner network, and the sector as a whole. As artificial intelligence moves from software into physical systems — robotics, automated manufacturing, medical devices, defense and aerospace — demand is rising across every role that turns a design into a working product: not only engineers, but the machinists, CNC programmers, toolmakers, quality and maintenance technicians, automation specialists, and production supervisors who make hardware that works safely and reliably in the real world.
The shortage across those roles is the Foundation’s reason for existing. MISUMI Americas sees it from both directions — in its customers’ engineering organizations, and across the manufacturing partners in its own supply network, where unfilled machinist, programmer, and technician positions directly limit the work a shop can take on. Difficulty staffing these roles is not a side effect of the sector’s growth; it is the primary limit on it.
MISUMI Americas’ own research, published in The Rise of U.S. Manufacturing in July 2026, documented both sides of that equation. U.S. manufacturing value added reached a record $2.91 trillion in 2024, and the sector has attracted $2.42 trillion in cumulative foreign direct investment — more than any other sector in the country. But the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte project the industry will need 3.8 million additional workers by 2033, with 1.9 million of those positions at risk of going unfilled. Roughly 2.8 million of that need comes from replacing retiring workers More than 65% of manufacturers report that attracting and retaining skilled talent is their single biggest business challenge.
The report also highlighted the trend the Foundation is built around. Enrollment at high-vocational community colleges has grown nearly 20% since Spring 2020, and undergraduate certificate programs have expanded for four consecutive years. Yet total enrollment at those institutions remains under one million students nationwide. The constraint is funding, not interest.
“MISUMI has spent decades supplying the components engineers design into machines, so we know exactly who builds the physical world,” said Dave Evans, President & CEO of MISUMI Americas. “We also know the talent pipeline is too narrow for the moment we’re in. AI is moving into factories, vehicles, and operating rooms, and that work takes engineers, machinists, and technicians — not just software. This Foundation is our investment in the talent pipeline the industry depends on. “
Evans said the Foundation’s approach was inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s concept of the trim tab, a small secondary rudder that helps turn a large ship. “You don’t change a system by moving all of it at once. You find the small lever in the right place and you keep pushing. A scholarship that lets one student finish a degree is a small thing. Thousands of them, over a decade, are not.”
Supplier network invited to co-invest
A central feature of the Foundation is the Partner Network, which invites MISUMI’s global supplier network to participate alongside MISUMI Americas. Participating partners make annual, voluntary, tax-deductible contributions and join the Foundation Advisory Board, which meets twice yearly to set grant priorities and announce awards jointly. Three participation tiers — Founding Partner, Growth Partner, and Community Partner — provide entry points at different commitment levels.
The model reflects a view that the talent shortage is an industry-wide problem rather than a company-specific one. Partners gain access to a governed, tax-deductible giving vehicle without establishing foundations of their own.
The Foundation begins its work in the United States, with the intention of expanding internationally as it matures. The Foundation extends MISUMI Americas’ Imprint platform, which explores the real-world challenges shaping physical AI — including safety, reliability, labor, regulation, capital intensity, and the people needed to build and scale these systems.
“MISUMI, the manufacturing industry, and society grow and develop together — this has been our philosophy since the company’s founding,” said Arata Shimizu, Chief Executive Officer, MISUMI Group Inc. “For more than sixty years, MISUMI has supported the people who make things. The Imprint Foundation is the first time we have built an organization dedicated to the next generation of builders. It launches in the United States, but is a global initiative. We intend to extend it across the regions MISUMI serves, and into communities where manufacturing is beginning to take root.”
The first grant cycle is expected to open in early 2027. Organizations and institutions interested in the Foundation’s work, and suppliers interested in the partner program, can learn more at misumi.com/imprint.
The Foundation is not MISUMI Americas’ only response to the talent shortage. In July, the company endorsed H.R. 9097, the American Manufacturing Revitalization Exchange Program Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) that would create an exchange program allowing American manufacturing workers to train in advanced production skills in allied nations and return with that experience. Together, the Foundation and MISUMI Americas’ support for the legislation reflect the company’s view that closing the skills gap will require both private investment and public policy.
